The classical (Wet) Chemistry Laboratory

Classical (Wet) Chemistry refers to empirical tests performed using analytical chemical testing methods and processes in accordance with national and international standards. Unlike instrumental methods, classical chemistry provides absolute values without relying on reference samples. Due to its precision, classical methods are often utilized for the Chemical Analysis of Metals, offering additional certainty in ambiguous or critical cases.

At MPPL, the Classical Chemistry Laboratory is divided into two main sections: the Hot Zone and the Cold Zone.

  • Hot Zone:

    This area houses furnaces, ovens, and hot plates. The hot plates are located in a fume cupboard equipped with an exhaust system that filters fumes through a scrubber, ensuring no harmful emissions enter the atmosphere.
  • Cold Zone:

    Air-conditioned with strict humidity and temperature control, this zone is designed for precision work. Weighing is conducted on a balance placed on a vibration-free slab to ensure error-free results. Workstations are dedicated to titrimetric and gravimetric chemical analysis work of various ferro-alloys such as, ferro-silicon testing, ferro-manganese testing and ferro-chrome testing. The Cold Zone also features ASTM Grade-1 water (18 M-ohm resistivity), ensuring the absence of ions for accurate Ore and Mineral Testing and Chemical Analysis for Non-ferrous Metals.

The lab adheres to national and international standards and uses validated, lab-developed methods as per clearly defined SOPs. All Chemical analysis by Wet chemistry is performed according to industry standards, ensuring high reliability.

Highly qualified chemists, trained in theoretical and practical aspects, operate all equipment and ensure the highest standards of accuracy. Additionally, the lab maintains a large inventory of certified reference materials for ongoing validation and recalibration of measurement instruments.
